“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” –Genesis 3:8-10 NIV
If you ever want to get a good laugh take time to watch children play hide and seek. As one begins to count, which depending on their age can be quite cute, the others run around trying to find the best hiding place. Their enthusiasm and excitement can be seen all over their faces as they run around trying to hide behind trees, buildings, or bushes. When I would play with my own children or the children in children’s church I would always find it quite easy to find them. They would either be talking or there would be 10 other children in the same hiding spot. I always found a lot of enjoyment during those times.
In Genesis chapter 3 we find Adam and Eve in conversation with God. God was walking through the garden that He had created and was looking for the couple. I have to point this one point out, God masterfully created what you and I have the privilege of experiencing every day, relationship. As God came by the tree’s He called out to the couple who had been hiding from Him.
A simple lesson that we can all learn from this text is that we cannot hide from God. The Creator of the heavens, earth, all the living creatures on the earth, and the universe and all their intricacies, He knows His creation. He values it, especially us, the ones created in His image.
As you embark upon this New Year stop playing hide and seek with God. Know that He knows you, He desires for you to get to know Him on a whole new level. Take time to talk to God today, go for a walk and just observe His Creation and just remember that you are a part of it.
