"Building Relationship"

“Spring is in the air”, We can all say it, the newness of the landscape, the warm temperatures, and yes baseball season. There is nothing like it, for many the preseason has just started but they have been practicing since the end of the 2009 season. They really never took off, but in someway continued to train. There training pays off when the season starts, they put the most fine tuned players in their gifted positions. In doing so they can go through inning after inning without even a hick-up. I am amazed when a team is firing on all cylinders without flaw. The countless hours of training and hard work pays off, they are united each one doing their part and the fruit of their labor is a winning record.

A key priority to building a healthy and unified ball team is relationship. Relationship is the root to unity, trust, hope, love, etc. If a team builds healthy relationship a unified passion will be its fruit. When relationship is not a priority we find teams that are self motivated, inconsistent, divided, and failing.

In baseball we must become masters of the fundamentals, from those basic lessons we can excel. We can acknowledge some keys fundamentals in relationship building. The first fundamental is “Respect”, it is essential that each team members respect the other in word and action. The second fundamental is that of “Communication”, this is the most neglected element for many. Communication is not a monologue that one re sites but it is a dialogue that incorporates talking and listening. The Third fundamental is that of “Cooperation.” A conscious decision to work together, for the fulfillment of a cause. When the individuals on a team begin to practically put these fundamentals into practice their perspective changes and unity begins to develop. It becomes less about personalities, opinions, and status and more about family.

There are a few red flags when trying to build healthy relationships. One red flag may be “Conditions”, is your relationship based on what you can get out of it. So examine our motives is key. Another red flag may be “Envy”, we spend so much time critic and criticising others that we tear down rather that build up. The last red flag is “Pride”, we rely upon our successes and achievements thus believing the lie that we are the complete package or know it all.

In conclusion to build a healthy and unified team (family, coworkers, life group, ministry team etc.) we need to examine our hearts and begin to practice Respect, Communication, and Cooperation. It will cost us, because it is hard work, but the more we discipline our selves the better we will get. The result will be healthy relationships and victorious living.
